New information, old tumors

In spite of being the cancer endocrino more common, representing a 1 % of all the detected tumors, the thyroid gland cancer keeps still many unknowns. A team of scientists coordinated by Pilar Santiesteban, of the Institute of Biomedical Investigations Alberto Sols of the CSIC has just published several works that contribute new information to fight against some of the types of this pathology …

On one hand these scientists have verified that certain variant associated with the gene FOXE1, studied in more than 2000 persons, awards major susceptibility to develop tumors of these characteristics, turning it into a key factor. On the other hand, the molecular mechanism that sublies after one of the most pernicious consequences of these tumors, the metástasis, specifically those resistant to the action of the radioactive iodine, also is being analyzed extensively, suggesting him the implication of the oncogene BRAF and his effect on another important factor, TGFbeta.

In addition to the collaboration of the National Center of Oncological Investigations, the study has been provided with the participation of several hospitable centers of Spain and Italy. Some of the results have been published in the prestigious scientific magazines PLoS Genetics and Cancer Research. We are before new results. We are a more nearby step of new treatments …
